For some people, even die-tricky football enthusiasts, Super Bowl meals is as critical to activity working day as the match alone. And like many Floridians, Andy Hesman and Kenny Nadeau will be rooting for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers this weekend. But when it arrives to snacking, the two part methods, and voted very otherwise in our city-centric Tremendous Bowl Meals Showdown.
Hesman, operator of AJ’s Push in Longwood, has Tampa roots. Years ago, he and his previous business companion had a sandwich store in Cigar Metropolis. While it shut immediately after sustaining serious harm in the course of Hurricane Irma, its sister shop in Longwood still showcases Tampa adore through its Cuban sandwich.
Nadeau, ideal recognized as the Kenny driving Uncle Kenny’s BBQ & Catering in Clermont, was born and lifted in St. Louis, and while he’s been a happy Floridian due to the fact 1999, he’s just as happy showcasing the flavors of the Midwest via the barbecue for which it’s famed.
“There are so quite a few wonderful items about barbecue,” says Nadeau, who was bitten by the competition bug back again in 2005. “Sometimes there is controversy about which type is best — Carolina, Texas and so on — but none of that issues. Absolutely everyone enjoys remaining about the grill and the smoker and absolutely nothing brings spouse and children with each other like barbecue.”
As these, in our impromptu Super Bowl food stuff matchup, Nadeau falls squarely on the KCQ facet.
“In Missouri, we’re identified greatest for our ribs, with that awesome, sweet tomato-based mostly sauce with molasses and honey and brown sugar…”
And he should to know. Not only has Nadeau competed in the Globe Series of Barbecue — held every year in Kansas City — his sauce took home a Initial Place ribbon in 2012. This out of 280 entries in his class.
“It’s sweet with a minor back again-conclude bite to it,” he notes. You can get your self a bottle at Uncle Kenny’s — when I spoke with Nadeau just soon after the playoffs, people had been now getting their orders in for wings, ribs and even St. Louis-style pizza. But for our polling functions, we’re restricting the choice to Kansas Town Q.
“I enjoy a excellent Cuban sandwich,” says Nadeau, “but KC barbecue wins for the much better Tremendous Bowl food items. It’s a group favorite for tailgating and nothing at all beats the scent of a barbecue pit to carry people today alongside one another and get them in the temper to chow down!”
Hesman, of course, could have one thing to say about that. The New Jersey indigenous is a die-really hard football supporter, but without having his beloved Giants in the combine, he’s content to go all-in for Tampa — its team and its signature sandwich.
“There are so quite a few textures in a Cuban,” suggests Hesman. “Crispy on the outside the house, tender on the inside of, the crunch of the pickles… Our model is Tampa-model, with a twist.”
Every single sandwich starts off with excellent bread, he opines (we agree), but Hesman forgoes the Cuban bread for fresh-baked Telera bread from Apopka’s own Panaderia la Mexicana.
“The twist begins with the torta and then we use a mayo-mustard combine that allows for definitely good flavor. We use large-slice pickles that go over the total roll,” he clarifies. “I’m a large believer that almost everything has to be coastline-to-coast on a sandwich.”
Chorizo replaces Tampa’s signature salami, alongside with pit ham from Pennsylvania Dutch place and household-produced mojo pork.
“Tampa is the place the Cuban definitely received its notoriety and the activity is in the residence team’s stadium for the 1st time at any time,” states Hesman. “For this matchup, you have to go with the Florida food… Ours isn’t regular, but it is an amazing sandwich!”
Orlando’s very own Earl of Sandwich, Anthony “Biggie” Bencomo, is not a stickler for tradition at all. In reality, the founder of sandwich-themed clothing line Deli Contemporary Threads indicates combining the greatest of the two — concerning two slices of bread, of system.
“And because I am Cuban, why not make a Tremendous Bowl LV edition!”
Bencomo implies employing barbecued pork alternatively of the regular lechon.
“Tom Brady is the basic. Mahomes is the new taste. Creating a hybrid sandwich that incorporates the Cuban flavors and the Kansas Metropolis flavors — the barbecued pork with the pickles and the Swiss and the ham…? Which is going to be delicious.”
Which city’s food items are you rooting for? Vote now! And have a scrumptious Tremendous Bowl Sunday.
